Disneyland Weather by Month – Tips for Each Month of the Year

When planning a trip to the Disneyland Resort, weather can be a huge factor as southern California's weather can vary not only throughout the year but also throughout each day. Many assume Anaheim is has perfect weather year round, however this unfortunately is just not true. Southern California experiences rainy seasons as well as very cold and extremely hot and dry temperatures which can be all experienced within the same day.

Not only will you want to consider the weather when deciding on when to go to Disneyland, but it will also play a big part on what you decide to pack. We have noticed that guests who do not research and pack appropriately can have extremely negative experiences during their trip, however it is something that you can fairly easily avoid with research and proper planning. Make sure to check out our ultimate Disneyland packing list here.

We visit the Disneyland resort multiple times per month and have experienced all of the weather changes at Disneyland. In this article we will make the planning and packing process easier for you as we lay out the expected weather for each month of the year at Disneyland. We will also make suggestions on what to pack and other pros and cons to visiting Disneyland Resort throughout the different months of the year.

Weather Patterns and General Packing Tips for Disneyland

Generally, Disneyland experiences periods of hot, dry, cold, and rainy temperatures throughout the year. Although some months are worse than others, which we will detail below, all of these somewhat unpredictable weather patterns should be considered when you start packing. Our biggest packing tips include:

Pack Layers: We highly recommend packing an assortment of t-shirts, light sweatshirts, shorts, and jeans or long pants for most trips to Disneyland. Weather in southern California usually starts off very cool in the morning, heats up during the day, and cools down again at night. For long park days, layers will be needed in order to be comfortable in these weather changes. Since the cold and heat are in dry climates, the temperatures can feel even more extreme compared to other regions.

Utilize Disneyland Lockers: Another thing to consider is renting a locker at Disneyland. This will allow your party to carry more layers into the park and you can grab them as you need them throughout the day. Early mornings and evenings may drop into the 40s, but you will likely not want to hold onto your sweatshirt when the temperatures reach 70 degrees or more during the day.

Inside the Disneyland parks, lockers cost either $7 or $10 per day depending on the locker size. Lockers can be found on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park and Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure Park. You receive unlimited access to these lockers each day, however lockers inside the parks are only accessible during park operating hours. Items cannot be stored in lockers overnight, but if any items are left inside they will be taken to Disneyland's Lost and Found.

Outside the parks, lockers are also available for either $7, $10, $12, or $15 per day. Guests can use lockers located at The Esplanade and outside the Main Entrances to both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.

Pack Raingear: Although it doesn't typically rain in southern California, you will want to be prepared with raingear such as a water resistant jacket or poncho. Disneyland experiences the most rain between December and February, however it is also common in November and March. Therefore, you'll definitely want to bring some extra raingear if you are visiting during those months. However, it never hurts to bring at least a poncho from home during any trip just incase you experience an unexpected rain shower. Ponchos at Disneyland cost $12 for adults and $10 for children which is pretty expensive for a poncho. We recommend purchasing cheaper ones at Wal-Mart, Target, or Amazon prior to your trip to avoid this unexpected charge.

Check Weather: This may sound obvious, but we want to reemphasize checking the weather forecast on the days leading up to your trip. This will give you the most up to date forecast and can help you decide on last minute items to pack. Months such as October can be very unpredictable, and even if you visit during the same time each year, the weather may be drastically different. Weather can change drastically from day to day and it will help make your trip more enjoyable if you pack appropriately.

Disneyland Weather by Month

The following section will describe the average high temperature, average low temperature, and our overall thoughts on the weather at Disneyland Resort each month of the year. It's important to remember weather is unpredictable, and we always recommend checking the weather forecast when you start packing up until the very last day before you leave for your trip. Readers will probably notice the smartest way to pack for most Disney trips is with layers, as many times it is much colder in the mornings and evenings than it is during the day.

January Weather and Tips

matterhorn at disneyland

Average High: 66 degrees
Average Low: 28 degrees

Weather Patterns: Disneyland weather in January can be very unpredictable and guests should be prepared for both cold and rain. January is one of southern California’s rainiest months which can be an inconvenience, however, there are typically lower crowds in January which is a plus.

What to Pack: Although most days in January will likely be cold or rainy, you may also catch some pleasantly warm days so we highly recommend packing layers. A large majority of rides at both Disneyland and California Adventure are indoors, so the rain shouldn’t impact your theme park day with closures. Some rides with outdoor tracks may be closed during rain or lightning storms as Disneyland does their best to prioritize safety of guests and cast members. However, they always do their best to get the rides up and running as quickly as possible.

Limited Operating Hours and Ride Refurbishments: Although the crowds may be lower in January, one additional thing to consider is that Disneyland’s operating hours are typically shorter and a lot of refurbishments take place during this time period. You can check out the list of refurbishments in Disneyland in early 2024 here or keep tabs on Disneyland's daily calendar which lists all of the park's closures. Additionally, some of Disneyland's shows and entertainment may be limited in January, as it is considered an off season.

February Weather and Tips

sweetheart's nite ticket at disneyland

Average High: 69 degrees
Average Low: 48 degrees

Weather Patterns: February is another month where Disneyland experiences some of the most rain throughout the month. It is also highly recommended to keep an eye on the weather leading up to the day you leave for Disneyland. Although it can still be unpredictable, checking the weather can help the packing process easier and prepare you for each day.

What to Pack: February is another month where you need to pack all layers of clothing including rain gear or ponchos. Although it will likely be warmer during this month compared to January, we still recommend packing layers and rain gear. You may also want to consider packing two or more pairs of shoes in case you get trapped in a downpour.

Ride Refurbishments: Similar to January, Disneyland will still be experiencing some refurbishment periods throughout February. Make sure to plan ahead and review Disneyland's list of ride closures when planning your trip. Although crowds will be lower, sometimes ride closures can make or break a trip!

March Weather and Tips

Average high: 72 degrees
Average Low: 50 degrees

Weather Patterns: March can be a beautiful time of year to visit Disneyland Resort, however, there is still a likelihood of rain and varying temperatures including hot, dry, and rainy.

What to Pack: Although you will likely wear more short or long sleeve t-shirts in March, I would still be prepared with at least one light sweatshirt and raincoats or ponchos for a trip to Disneyland in March.

Ride Closures: An upside to visiting Disneyland in March is that most of the rides that were previously closed for refurbishment start to open during this month. However, despite some of the re-openings of favorite attractions and shows, sometimes rides break down more often during this month because it is a slower time of year.

Notable Events: March also kicks off the start of several fun events and festivals throughout the parks. One of our favorites, the Disneyland Food and Wine Festival, returned on March 1st of this year. Additionally, Disneyland will have special celebratory items for St. Patrick's Day and Easter during the month of March. This typically includes special snacks and treats as well as special events such as an Easter egg scavenger hunt.

Spring Breakers: As ride refurbishments finalize and the weather starts to get nicer, higher crowd levels also start to begin. Be mindful of spring breaks that usually start in March which cause an influx of guests.

April Weather and Tips

mary poppins at disneyland

Average high: 74 degrees
Average Low: 54 degrees

Weather Patterns: April is a beautiful month in southern California, with highs consistently reaching the mid 70s and lows staying above the 50s. You will also notice less rain in April which makes it convenient for days visiting the parks.

What to Pack: You will probably only need one or two light sweatshirts to pack for an April trip to Disneyland. Although it still may get chilly at night or in the early morning, t-shirts and shorts will be your go to clothing items each day. I would still recommend brining a rain coat or poncho just in case as rain is still a factor in April.

Notable Events: Disneyland's Food and Wine Festival will still be continuing in April which is a great time to visit Disneyland. Dapper Day also occurs each April, which is a celebration of vintage style clothing. Although this is typically a busy day in the parks, it is a fun event to witness and especially to participate in during your trip.

Crowd Levels: Early April typically sees higher crowd levels due to the Food and Wine Festival, spring breakers, and nicer weather. We recommend waiting towards the end of the month for lower crowds, however, the weather will likely be very enjoyable throughout the month of April.

May Weather and Tips

galaxys edge at disneyland

Average high: 75 degrees
Average Low: 66 degrees

Weather Patterns: May begins the start of sunny and hot days in southern California.  There is a very low likelihood of experiencing rain during May. It is one of the best months to visit Disneyland as although it may get pretty warm at certain parts of the day, in general it is very pleasant and enjoyable.

What to Pack: We definitely recommend bringing sunscreen and proper clothing such as t-shirts, shorts, sunglasses, and hats. It is unlikely you will get cold, but a light jacket or sweatshirt may be needed for the evenings.

Crowds: With the exception of Memorial Day and most weekends, May is a great month to visit Disneyland before the summer months begin.

Notable Events: Grad Nites run from the middle of May through June, which is a ticketed afterhours event. Expect bigger crowds on these days as these guests are able to enter the parks before closing. Star Wars celebrations also occur on May 4th which brings in larger crowds. However, overall May is a nice time to visit Disneyland, especially on weekdays towards the beginning of the month.

June Weather and Tips

avengers campus at disney california adventure park

Average high: 81 degrees
Average Low: 61 degrees

Weather Patterns: June begins the hot summer months in Anaheim with the temperatures rarely dipping below 60 degrees. Definitely come prepared to experience high levels of warmth during the day. We usually recommend taking lots of breaks and increasing hydration throughout the day especially at the parks.

What to Pack: Due to the warmer weather, you'll want to have t-shirts, shorts, hats, and sunscreen in your luggage. Athletic and lightweight clothing made of linen or polyester may also be preferred to avoid sweat and stay cool. We also recommend avoiding clothing with dark colors which can create more heat.

Crowds: Most summer vacations begin in June, meaning higher crowd levels throughout the month. However, Disneyland is now in the swing of longer operating hours, more entertainment, and more ways for crowds to disperse throughout the parks.

Notable Events: Grad Nites will continue in the first couple weeks of June, along with Pixar Fest and Disneyland After Dark Pride Nite. These events are separately ticketed events that may draw in larger crowds especially on days of these events.

July Weather and Tips

incredicoaster at disney california adventure park

Average high: 84 degrees
Average Low: 66 degrees

Weather Patterns: The hot weather really kicks it up a notch in July at Disneyland. While there is little rain expectancy, be prepared for hot weather! July is a great time to enjoy your resort pool or water rides. However, make sure you are adequately prepared for scorching temperatures reaching well into the high 80s. We also highly recommend taking many breaks throughout the day. One of the best perks of Disneyland is the close proximity to many hotels which are within walking distance. Therefore, midday breaks are a great idea to stay cool and withstand the hot weather.

What to Pack: You will not survive long days at the Disneyland parks without sunscreen as well as comfortable and cool clothing. We've also seen guests use neck fans, cooling towels, and lots of water to stay hydrated in July.

Crowds: Summer break is in full swing in July, so expect some of the highest crowd levels. With the return of sales of Disneyland's Annual Passes, you may see even more crowds this summer. The fourth of July is also a very popular time for guests to visit Disneyland.

August Weather and Tips

jessies critter carousel and disney california adventure park

Average high: 86 degrees
Average Low: 66 degrees

Weather Patterns: Warm weather in southern California continues through the month of August. In fact, August is one of the hottest months in Disneyland. August days will bring a lot of sun and warmth and very little rain.

What to Pack: Due to the hot weather, you will definitely want to wear cool clothing to keep you sweatproof and comfortable throughout the day. Sunscreen and hats will also prevent sunburn and discomfort at the parks.

Crowds: Crowd levels will be very high especially towards the beginning of the month because many schools will still be on summer break. You may see less people towards the end of the month when school is back in session, however the parks will still likely stay busy. It would probably help to purchase Genie+ or Individual Lightning Lanes for a trip in August. You can also read our Disneyland morning strategy here.

September Weather and Tips

carsland during halloween at disney california adventure park

Average high: 84 degrees
Average Low: 63 degrees

Weather Patterns: Some as surprised to discover that September is another hot month in Disneyland. Although some of the early mornings and evenings can be very pleasant, be prepared for it to be very hot during the day with temperatures reaching well into the 80s.

What to Pack: Similar to the other summer months, make sure you are adequately prepared for the sun and heat with proper clothing including t-shirts and shorts. Sunscreen is a must, and you may want to incorporate pool breaks in the middle of your day. Too much time out in the sun and heat can ruin a Disneyland vacation.

Notable Events: Halloween starts at the end of August in Disneyland, so by September it will be in full swing! Make note of the Oogie Boogie Bash Halloween event dates, because on those days guests without a ticket to this event will be asked to leave Disney California Adventure park by 5PM. These tickets sell out within minutes of when they go on sale, so if you want to experience this popular event we highly recommend keeping an eye on when these tickets go on sale. In addition to the Oogie Boogie Bash, Disneyland will have special Halloween fireworks as well as the very popular Nightmare Before Christmas overlay at Haunted Mansion.

Crowds: Due to the Halloween season, crowd levels are fairly high in September. The only plus side is many kids go back to school after Labor Day, which may lessen crowds but not by much. Halloween is a very popular season in Disneyland, so crowds are likely to remain high.

October Weather and Tips

oogie boogie bash light display on cathay circle

Average high: 76 degrees
Average Low: 63 degrees

Weather Patterns: Although the weather starts to get slightly cooler in October, you'll want to keep an eye on the forecast as we have seen consecutive days reach over 90 degrees during this month.

What to Pack: Don't put away your t-shirts and shorts just yet, because October still can be a very warm month in southern California. Additionally, if you are planning on dressing in a costume for the Oogie Boogie Bash, you may want to consider wearing a costume that can be layered or adjusted based on the forecast. Always bring sunscreen, hats, and maybe a cooling towel or neck fan to stay cool during those potentially hot days in October.

Notable Events: Oogie Boogie Bash will continue throughout this month, so again keep in mind the dates of these events especially when you plan on visiting Disney California Adventure Park. Another event in October is the Plaza de la Familia which takes place at California Adventure through October. This event is inspired by the Disney film Coco and celebrates Día de los Muertos through music and storytelling.

Crowds: Crowds will continue to be high during October due to the Halloween events. Not only is the Oogie Boogie Bash one of the most popular events at Disneyland, but many guests enjoy simply walking around the parks to see the decorations and see characters dressed up in Halloween costumes.

November Weather and Tips

mickey and minnie during thanksgiving at disneyland

Average high: 70 degrees
Average Low: 53 degrees

Weather Patterns: November starts the moderate weather in southern California with an average high of about 70 degrees. With the holiday season kicking off in addition to the cooler weather, November is an extremely popular time of year to visit Disneyland.

What to Pack: It can still be fairly warm at Disneyland in November, so we recommend packing layers of short and long sleeve t-shirts, a light jacket, and shorts or pants. Additionally, although unlikely, it may rain because November is the start of California's rainy season. Therefore, we recommend packing a rain coat or poncho. As previously mentioned, renting a locker may be wise for November trips due to the unpredictable weather changes during this month.

Notable Events: Dapper Day takes place on November 3, 2024 at Disneyland, which is a celebration of vintage-style clothing. Many guests visit the park on this day so it may be busier than normal, however it is a very fun and enjoyable event. Thanksgiving also draws in large crowds as most kids have several days off school.

Crowds: As expected during the holiday season, crowds will be at an all time high. We definitely recommend purchasing Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes in order to experience your favorite attractions during this time of year. Also, make sure to book dining reservations in order to secure meals at your favorite table service and character dining restaurants. Although this is a special time of year at Disneyland, it becomes very crowded.

December Weather and Tips

it's a small world christmas entrance at disneyland

Average high: 67 degrees
Average Low: 48 degrees

Weather Patterns: December brings very mild weather and is extremely pleasant especially for the wintertime. Although there will be a few rainy days in December, in general you will still see plenty of sunshine and warm days this month.

What to Pack: Similar to November, be prepared for all kinds of weather. We recommend packing layers, rain gear, and sunscreen as you will likely need to dress for all types of weather. However, December is a very nice time to visit southern California as it does not get too hot and makes Disneyland park days extremely enjoyable.

Notable Events: The Festival of the Holidays at Disney California Adventure Park starts in mid-November and runs through December. There are also Christmas overlays for It's a Small World and Haunted Mansion attractions that are worth experiencing. There are about 250,000 lights added to the outside of It's a Small World and about 30,000 lights added to the inside! Haunted Mansion will continue to display the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay throughout the month of December. Disneyland will also have special Christmas fireworks, a parade, specialty treats, and seasonal meet and greets during December.

nightmare before christmas overlay for haunted mansion at disneyland

Crowds: Disneyland is at it's busiest during December due to the holiday vacations and special events taking place throughout the month. We highly recommend making reservations as early as possible and to be mentally prepared for large crowds. Although the crowds are very high, the holidays are a special time to visit Disneyland and everyone should experience all it has to offer as least once.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the coldest month in Disneyland?

December and January are the coldest months to visit Disneyland Resort. Although the average low can drop to 48 degrees, the average highs are still around a warm 67 degrees during the day. December is one of the best, but busiest, times to visit Disneyland because of the holiday-themed parade, fireworks, and attraction overlays such as the Haunted Mansion's Nightmare Before Christmas overlay. The weather can also be pleasant if you pack properly with warm attire. Although January is also cold, crowd levels are typically very low during this time of year making it a nice time to visit.

When is the best month to visit Anaheim, California?

The best month to visit Anaheim, California is between March, April, and May as well as November. These months have the most moderate temperatures which make vacations to the Disneyland Resort very pleasant. Although there may be a chance of rain in the spring months, the temperatures will likely be around 75 degrees during the day and in the mid 50s at night. Therefore, there will be opportunities to swim in your pool, but it won't be too hot to visit any of the Disneyland theme parks.

Does Disneyland get cold at night?

Yes, Disneyland gets cold at night even during the hot summer months. Temperatures can drop as low as 40 degrees and feel even colder after being outside in the warmth all day. Therefore, we highly recommend bringing layers of clothing to Disneyland in preparation of the weather changes. We also recommend using the Disneyland lockers to store any additional layers or rain ponchos as they are very convenient for guests instead of having to walk back to their hotel or purchase a new sweatshirt at the parks.

How often does it rain at Disneyland?

It does not rain often at Disneyland, with an average of 23 rainy days per year in Anaheim. The rainiest days are typically in January, February, and March, with an average of 4 of 5 rainy days each. Although Anaheim's rainstorms are not as bad as Disney World in Orlando, Florida, guests should be prepared to experience some rain on occasion. We recommend storing extra layers of clothing and a poncho in a locker or your hotel room just in preparation for unpredictable weather changes.
