Is Disneyland or Disney World Cheaper?

Disneyland and Disney World… Walt’s creation and Walt’s dream. These two U.S.-based Disney Theme Parks have many similarities. However, they also have their fair share of differences. One of these differences is their cost. Have you ever compared the prices between the two? That’s exactly what we’re going to do today in this article.

Does its location in California naturally cause Disneyland to be more expensive? Or does Disney World’s larger size result in larger prices? We’re going to take a look at different aspects of a Disney vacation to determine if Disneyland or Disney World is cheaper. We’ll of course look at the price of tickets and resorts, but we’ll also take a look at additional items, such as digital photo downloads, and Genie+.

I frequently go on Disney vacations and have been to both Disneyland and Disney World. I’m excited to dive deeper into these price differences in order to determine if Disneyland or Disney World is cheaper.

Disney World

Star Wars Lego Disney Springs

Disney World tickets are able to be purchased for a longer amount of time. When purchasing tickets to Disney World, you can choose a length of time to visit the parks from 1 to 10 days. Since we are simply trying to compare the prices in order to see whether Disneyland or Disney World is cheaper, I’m only going to show Disney World ticket prices for up to 5 days. Likewise, I’m only going to compare the same ticket types.

On that note, there are more ticket types available at Disney World. The four available ticket types are: One Park Per Day, Park Hopper, Water Park and Sports, and Park Hopper Plus. The first two options work the same at Disney World as they do at Disneyland. With a One Park Per Day ticket, you can visit one theme park in a single day. With a Park Hopper ticket, you can visit multiple theme parks in a single day. The Water Park and Sports option allows you to visit one theme park as well as one additional Disney World location in a single day. Finally, the Park Hopper Plus ticket allows you to visit multiple theme parks as well as one additional Disney World location in a single day. The prices of Disney World tickets vary by date and, for single One Park Per Day tickets, by theme park.

Disney World Tickets

  • One Park Per Day
    • 1 Day
      • Magic Kingdom $134
      • EPCOT – $119
      • Hollywood Studios – $129

Just like Disneyland, Disney World also has annual passes available. These passes grant you access into the theme parks for a whole year and also come with additional benefits. Currently, Disney World has four passes available. These passes are: Disney Incredi-Pass, Disney Sorcerer Pass, Disney Pirate Pass, and Disney Pixie Dust Pass. Tickets – Are They Cheaper at Disneyland or Disney World?

Disney World Ticket EPCOT

From the information provided, it's not easy to say if tickets at Disneyland or Disney World are cheaper. When it comes to tickets, sometimes Disneyland is cheaper and sometimes Disney World is cheaper. For Single Day tickets, for both One Park Per Day and Park Hopper, Disneyland is cheaper than Disney World. However, once we get into the multi-day tickets, these two go back and forth on the more affordable cost. Therefore, I’m going to list the different ticket types that we went over and then note whether Disneyland or Disney World is cheaper.

  • One Park Per Day
    • 1 Day – Disneyland is cheaper with tickets starting at $104. Disney World’s start at $109.
    • 2 Days – Disney World is cheaper with tickets starting at $229.54. Disneyland’s are $310.
    • 3 Days – Disney World is cheaper with tickets starting at $352.18. Disneyland’s are $390.
    • 4 Days – Disneyland is cheaper with tickets priced at $445. Disney World’s start at $470.70.
    • 5 Days – Disneyland is cheaper with tickets priced at $480. Disney World’s start at $517.26.
  • Park Hopper
    • 1 Day – Disneyland is cheaper with tickets starting at $169. Disney World’s start at $188.
    • 2 Days – Disney World is cheaper with tickets starting at $304.54. Disneyland’s are $375.
    • 3 Days – Disney World is cheaper with tickets starting at $427.18. Disneyland’s are $460.
    • 4 Days – Disneyland is cheaper with tickets priced at $515. Disney World’s start at $555.70.
    • 5 Days – Disneyland is cheaper with tickets priced at $555. Disney World’s start at $602.26.

While they do go back and forth, tickets are more often cheaper at Disneyland than they are at Disney World.

Annual Passes – Are They Cheaper at Disneyland or Disney World?

In regards to passes, Disney World’s Annual Passes are cheaper than Disneyland’s Magic Key Passes. However, most of Disney World’s Annual Passes aren't available to ALL Guests. The majority of their passes are for Florida Residents with one also being available to DVC Members. There is only one Disney World Annual Pass that all Guests are able to get. Unfortunately, it is also the most expensive pass.

Disneyland’s Magic Key passes, however, are very much available to everyone. There is only one pass that’s limited to SoCal Residents. That leaves three Magic Key passes that are available to ALL Guests.

Answer: Disney World

Disney Hotel Prices

In order to compare hotel prices at Disneyland and Disney World, I’m going to pick one specific date and then price out the hotels at each. That way, we can get a good view across the board of how their hotel prices compare to each other. Since Disney World has so many hotels, especially in comparison to Disneyland, I won’t be listing the price of each and every one.

For this example, I chose a check-in date of August 18th, 2024 and a check-out date of August 19th, 2024. While checking the rates of this one night, Disney World has cheaper hotel options available. Let’s take a look.

Disneyland Hotels

Pixar Place Hotel

  • Pixar Place Hotel – $487/night
  • Disneyland Hotel – $542/night
  • Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa – $807/night

Disney World Hotels

Polynesian Village Resort lobby

  • The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness – $72/night
  • Disney’s All-Star Music Resort – $150/night
  • Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort – $150/night
  • Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort – $173/night
  • Disney’s Pop Century Resort – $199/night
  • Disney’s Art of Animation Resort – $231/night
  • Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort – $289/night
  • Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside – $304/night
  • Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort – $309/night
  • Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter – $309/night
  • Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa – $403/night
  • The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness – $422/night
  • Disney’s Old Key West Resort – $429/night
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – $446/night
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village – $446/night
  • Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge – $480/night
  • Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge – $480/night
  • Disney’s Wilderness Lodge – $480/night

After that, we finally get to the first Disney World hotel that surpasses the lowest hotel price at Disneyland. It’s quite apparent that Disney World has much cheaper hotel options available. Due to the quantity of hotels that are on Disney World property, I feel like that’s to be expected. Disney World is a larger property which gives more space to put a wider variety of hotels that stretch between a wide range of prices.

However, it's worth noting that many Disneyland visitors stay at the local off-site hotels which are numerous in the area. Those prices are always going to be far less than the official Disneyland hotels.

Digital Photo Downloads

Disney World PhotoPass Photographers

At both Disneyland and Disney World, there is a service that allows Guests to save all of the memories that were captured on their trip. Disney’s photo service is called Disney PhotoPass. Disney PhotoPass photographers are placed throughout both Disneyland and Disney World to take pictures of Guests in front of park icons, attractions, and with characters. Disney PhotoPass also captures pictures of Guests (and sometimes videos) on certain rides.

You have the option to purchase these pictures and videos and download them to your mobile device, computer, etc. At Disneyland, to get these pictures, you would use PhotoPass+. At Disney World, you would use Memory Maker.

Disneyland PhotoPass and PhotoPass+

  • One PhotoPass Photo – $14.99
  • PhotoPass+ – $30
    • Genie+ can be purchased each day for $30 [sometimes more]. When purchasing Genie+, you will automatically receive all of your Disney PhotoPass photos and videos for the day.
  • PhotoPass+ One Week – $78
    • Includes all Disney PhotoPass photos and videos taken within seven consecutive days.

Disney World PhotoPass and Memory Maker

  • One PhotoPass Photo – Around $19
  • Memory Maker Single Day – $75
    • Includes all Disney PhotoPass photos and videos taken in a single day.
  • Memory Maker  (Advance Purchase) – $185
    • Includes all Disney PhotoPass photos and videos taken within 30 days of activation.
  • Memory Maker (During and Post-Vacation Purchase) – $210
    • Includes all Disney PhotoPass photos and videos taken within 30 days of activation.

As you can see, it’s much cheaper to purchase your vacation photos from Disneyland than it is from Disney World. Plus, if you’re purchasing Genie+ to get your photos for the day, you also get the additional benefits of Genie+!

In just a moment, I will go over Genie+ more thoroughly!

Disney Genie+ Prices

Disney Genie+ logo

Disney Genie+ is Disney’s “skip the line” service. When using Genie+ at Disneyland and Disney World, you will have the opportunity to book Lightning Lanes for popular rides and attractions. Lightning Lanes are lines that are separate from the regular Stand-By Line and grant Guests access to select rides and attractions at a quicker pace. Not only will there be less Guests in the Lightning Lanes, but these lines will also be prioritized over the Stand-By Lines.

Genie+ is an optional service. However, if you do want to utilize it, you will need to purchase it for every member of your party that wants Lightning Lane access. Anyone who does not have it will not be able to join you in the Lightning Lane and will have to wait in the regular Stand-By Line. Furthermore, you will need to purchase it for every day of your trip that you want to skip the regular lines. If you do not purchase Genie+ on a particular day, you will not be able to skip the lines that day.

Another way to get expedited access to rides and attractions is by purchasing Individual Lightning Lanes. This is an à la carte version of Genie+. When you purchase an Individual Lightning Lane, you are paying to get quicker access to one ride or attraction one time. The purchasing of Individual Lightning Lanes is not something that’s available for many rides and attractions. Usually this is something that’s only available for the most popular rides in the park.

Both Disneyland and Disney World offer Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes. However, their prices are different. Keep reading to find out if Disneyland or Disney World offers Genie+ at a cheaper price.

Disneyland Genie+

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Lightning Lane sign

One difference between Disneyland’s Genie+ and Disney World’s Genie+, besides pricing, is the fact that you can purchase the service ahead of time. This perk is no longer offered at Disney World.

Genie+ at Disneyland includes:

  • Lightning Lane access to select rides and attractions at Disneyland Park and California Adventure Park
  • Disney PhotoPass Lenses (Disney-themed photo lenses for your mobile phone)
  • Audio Tales
  • Unlimited Downloads of Disney PhotoPass Photos and Videos

Disneyland Genie+ Cost

  • Genie+ – $30-$35 per person, per day

Disney World Genie+

It's Tough To Be A Bug Lightning Lane

As I mentioned, you can no longer purchase Genie+ ahead of time at Disney World. You will simply purchase it each day that you want to use it. This is due to the pricing of Genie+ at Disney World. The price of Genie+ fluctuates almost daily. You can expect to see higher prices during popular times of the year, such as Spring Break and holidays. The price also differs for each park. You will be given the option to purchase Genie+ for Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or Animal Kingdom. You'll also have the option to purchase Genie+ for ALL of the parks. You'd most likely want to do this if you plan on park hopping.

Genie+ at Disney World includes:

  • Lightning Lane access to select rides and attractions at the park of your choosing (or all of the parks if you select that option).
  • Digital downloads of select Disney PhotoPass attraction images taken on the day of your purchase.
  • Disney PhotoPass Lenses (Disney-themed photo lenses for your mobile phone)
  • Audio Tales

Disney World Genie+ Cost

  • Genie+ – $15-$39 per person, per day

Genie+ – Is it cheaper at Disneyland or Disney World?

Between Disneyland and Disney World, Genie+ is offered at a cheaper starting price at Disney World than it is at Disneyland. While it is convenient that you can have Genie+ paid for prior to your trip to Disneyland, you still have a better chance of getting it cheaper at Disney World. Especially if your Disney vacation is happening during a less popular time of the year.

However, while Disney World does start Genie+ off at a lower price at face value, don’t forget that Disneyland’s Genie+ includes all of your Disney PhotoPass photos and videos for the day while Disney World’s only includes select attraction photos. If you want all of your Disney PhotoPass photos and videos at Disney World, you’d have to also purchase Memory Maker, which in turn, could make it more expensive.

Where is Genie+ cheaper? Disneyland or Disney World?

Answer: Disney World

Individual Lightning Lanes

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Lightning Lane

For this à la carte service, you can expect prices to range from $12-$25 per ride. The prices vary depending on the popularity of the ride and how busy the parks are. Similarly to Genie+, you should expect Individual Lightning Lanes to have a higher price during popular times of the year. Individual Lightning Lanes average out with the same prices at both Disneyland and Disney World.

Which has the cheapest Individual Lightning Lanes? Disneyland or Disney World?

Answer: Neither. Individual Lightning Lanes average the same price at both Disneyland and Disney World.

Is Disneyland or Disney World Cheaper?

Chip and Dale

Now that we’ve looked at the basic aspects of a Disney vacation, is Disneyland or Disney World cheaper? From the information that we’ve looked at, both of these Disney Destinations are pretty comparable in price in a lot of areas.

One thing that we didn’t discuss about these two parks is dining. However, that is again, something that is comparable between the two parks. Both Disneyland and Disney World have snacks, quick-service meals, table service meals, and specialty dining such as Character Meals and Dessert Parties. The prices for all of these dining options are about the same at both locations. While Disney World does offer a meal plan, with what’s included, it doesn’t really make your food cheaper. It’s more so just a nice way to have your food paid for prior to your trip.

Between Disneyland and Disney World, here’s what was cheaper:

  • Disneyland
    • Digital Photo Downloads
    • Tickets
  • Disney World
    • Genie+
    • Hotels
    • Annual Passes

Overall, Disney World turns out to have more things available at a cheaper price than Disneyland does. Especially if you consider that not everyone cares to have downloads of their Disney PhotoPass photos. Since Disney PhotoPass photographers will also take pictures with your personal camera or mobile device, some Guests don’t feel the need to purchase their PhotoPass photos at all.

Which is cheaper? Disneyland or Disney World?

Answer: Disney World

Is There a Cheaper Disney Vacation?

Mickey Mouse Magic Kingdom

Again, both Disneyland and Disney World are very comparable in a lot of aspects. Even so, have you considered the option that one of the other Disney Theme Parks may be cheaper than both of them? Yes, I’m suggesting that the international parks may be cheaper than both Disneyland and Disney World. Have you ever compared the prices? Let’s do that now!

International Disney Parks

Overseas, you’ll find these four Disney Destinations:

  • Tokyo Disney Resort
    • Tokyo Disneyland
    • Tokyo DisneySea
  • Disneyland Paris
    • Disneyland Paris
    • Walt Disney Studios Park
  • Hong Kong Disney Resort
    • Hong Kong Disneyland
  • Shanghai Disney Resort
    • Shanghai Disneyland

As far as pricing goes for an international Disney vacation, let’s think of this in terms of currency. Tokyo Disney Resort is located in Japan where the currency is the Japanese Yen. Disneyland Paris is located in France where the currency is the Euro. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Shanghai Disney Resort are both located in China where the currency is the Chinese Yuan (or Renminbi). Not sure how those compare to the U.S. Dollar? Let’s take a look.

1 U.S. Dollar is equivalent to:

  • 151.36 Japanese Yen
  • 0.92 Euro
  • 7.20 Chinese Yuan

Currently, the U.S. Dollar holds less value than the Euro. Compared to the Chinese Yuan, the U.S. Dollar is a bit more valuable. But most impressively, is the amount of value the U.S. Dollar holds in comparison to the Japanese Yen. That being said, a trip to Tokyo Disney Resort could be very affordable!

Tokyo Disney Resort Tickets

At Tokyo Disney Resort, you can currently get Single Day Tickets or Fixed Date and Time Passports. The Single Day ticket is called a 1-Day Passport and is equivalent to the One Park Per Day Ticket at Disneyland and Disney World. This ticket will give you access to either Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea for a single day.

The Fixed Date and Time Passports are either Early Evening Passports or Weeknight Passports. With an Early Evening Passport, Guests can enjoy Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea from 3:00pm-Close on weekends and holidays. Weeknight Passports allow Guests to visit Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea from 5:00pm-Close on weekdays (excluding holidays).

Now, let’s take a look at how much tickets cost for Tokyo Disney Resort and see how they compare to Disneyland and Disney World.

Ticket Prices

  • 1-Day Passport
    • Adult 7,900-10,900 yen (Equivalent to $52.20-$72.02)
    • Junior 6,600-9,000 yen (Equivalent to $43.61-$59.47)
    • Child 4,700-5,600 yen (Equivalent to $31.06-$37.00)
  • Early Evening Passport
    • Adult 6,500-8,700 yen (Equivalent to $42.95-$57.49)
    • Junior 5,300-7,200 yen (Equivalent to $35.02-$47.58)
    • Child 3,800-4,400 yen (Equivalent to $25.11-$29.07)
  • Weeknight Passport
    • Adult, Junior, and Child 4,500-6,200 yen (Equivalent to $29.73-$40.97)

As you can see, ticket prices for Tokyo Disney Resort are MUCH cheaper than they are for Disneyland and Disney World. Not only are their Single Day Tickets cheaper than at Disneyland and Disney World, but they also offer other, more affordable, ticket options that the U.S. Disney Theme Parks don't offer.

Tokyo Disney Resort Hotels

Tokyo Disney Resort Toy Story Hotel

Now that we’ve compared ticket prices, let's move onto hotels!

Tokyo Disney Resort has six hotels:

  • Tokyo DisneySea Fantasy Springs Hotel
  • Tokyo Disneyland Hotel
  • Disney Ambassador Hotel
  • Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta
  • Tokyo Disney Resort Toy Story Hotel
  • Tokyo Celebration Hotel

Hotels can’t be booked out as far in advance at Tokyo Disney Resort as they can at Disneyland or Disney World. I planned on selecting the same date that I used for my Disneyland and Disney World hotel comparison, but was unable to. Nonetheless, I selected July 16th, 2024 as the check-in date and July 17th, 2024 as the check-out date.

Tokyo Disney Resort Hotel Prices

  • Tokyo Disney Celebration Hotel – 21,500 yen (Equivalent to $142.06)
  • Tokyo Disney Resort Toy Story Hotel – 37,500 yen (Equivalent to $247.79)
  • Disney Ambassador Hotel – 46,500 yen (Equivalent to $307.26)
  • Tokyo Disneyland Hotel – 60,000 yen (Equivalent to $396.46)
  • Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta – 63,500 yen (Equivalent to $419.59)
  • Tokyo DisneySea Fantasy Springs Hotel – No Rooms Available for the Selected Date

The hotel prices at Tokyo Disney Resort are comparable to those at Disney World. However, Disney World did still have cheaper hotel options available. Nonetheless, Tokyo Disney Resort’s hotels are cheaper than Disneyland’s. The most expensive hotel at Tokyo Disney Resort is still cheaper than Disneyland’s cheapest hotel.

Tokyo Disney Resort “Genie+”

Tokyo Disney Resort 40th Anniversary Priority Pass

Tokyo Disney Resort actually does not have Genie+. They do, however, have a similar service that allows you to skip the regular Stand-By Lines. At Tokyo Disney Resort, this “skip the line” service is called 40th Anniversary Priority Pass. Right away, I found out that this service is much cheaper than it is at both Disneyland or Disney World. Tokyo Disney Resort “Individual Lightning Lanes”

Tokyo Disney Resort Disney Premier Access

Again, at Tokyo Disney Resort, they do not have Individual Lightning Lanes. However, there is a “pay per ride” service available that works exactly the same way. At Tokyo Disney Resort, this service is called Disney Premier Access. Disney Premier Access can be used to purchase an expedited wait time at select rides and attractions. As a reminder, this is an à la carte service. You will be paying to enjoy one ride or attraction one time.

Now the question is, How do Premier Access prices compare to the prices of Individual Lightning Lanes at Disneyland and Disney World? Premier Access prices are 1,500-2,500 yen which equals $9.94-$16.56. Again, this is another part of Tokyo Disney Resort that is cheaper than Disneyland and Disney World.
