We Interview Cara Goldsbury Bury From Luxury Guide to Disney World, and Glass Slipper Concierge
Today we have an interview with Disney World planning extraordinaire, Cara Goldsbury. Cara has written a Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World, and now runs Glass Slipper Concierge. She works an 80 hour work week, and still has time to do interviews like this. Thanks you so much Cara.
I hope that everyone enjoys this interview with the WDW planning extraordinaire.
What is your first memory at Disney? It wasn’t until I was a young adult that I first saw Disneyland park. It was a dream come true! But my most vivid memory is when I returned to Disneyland with my one-year-old son. He was toddling around when all of a sudden the Seven Dwarfs arrived, lined up to march behind him, mimicking his every move. It was simply magical!
How did you first become involved with Disney? I’ve been a travel agent for over thirty years and, of course, Disney has always been an important destination for my clients. But back in the good old days when travel agents had more free airline tickets than they could handle, Walt Disney World was my long weekend trip of choice using these complimentary tickets. It turned into a mother/daughter trip several times a year, and to this day continues to be a special place for us to spend time together. When both my children left home I was a bit worried I wouldn’t have enough to keep me busy so I decided to write a book. Thinking about what to write was pretty easy since travel was my passion and Walt Disney World was at the top of my list of favorite places.
You have written a book about Disney World, and now run a Disney travel agency. Did you know that this was what you wanted to do? I think because my family didn’t travel very much growing up that it was always my dream to make up for lost time as an adult and eventually see the world. And being a travel agent has allowed me to do just that. So yes, I suppose it was always something I wanted to do. Specializing in Disney was just a natural extension of my business that worked perfectly with my many years of experience. I think that specializing in a destination is so important for a travel agent, allowing for a personalized and highly consultative vacation planning approach to those wanting an expertly-planned Disney vacation.
What is your favorite attraction or experience at a Disney park, and what is your favorite Disney Park? My favorite Disney park is the Magic Kingdom. It embodies what is best about Disney all into one beautiful package. And my favorite attraction is Splash Mountain…I never get tired of it.
Where did your idea for the Luxury Guide to WDW come from? Time and time again I would return from my trips to Walt Disney World and tell my clients about the great restaurants and luxury experiences I had enjoyed. They all looked at me (and sometimes still do) like I was a bit crazy, never really believing that luxury and Disney could be spoken in the same sentence. I set out in my writing with the idea in mind to prove to them just how luxurious a Disney vacation can really be.
What is your favorite Disney souvenir that you have? I’m not much on souvenirs, always a surprise to people who visit my home. But sitting on my desk are crystal mementoes given to me at two Authorized Disney Vacation Planner conferences, one in the shape of Mickey ears, and one a crystal bottle with an etching of the Disney Dream.
Do you have one tip that everyone should know before visiting the Disney Parks and Disney World in particular? Whatever you do, find a Disney travel specialist that knows the intricacies and details of planning a Disney vacation. For instance, did you know if you book an Outer Building Theme Park View room category at the Grand Floridian you might not necessarily have a view of the castle, but only of Space Mountain? Or that there is a special area you’ll want to sit in at Artist Point restaurant at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge? Or that even though Disney reservations will tell you there are no 3-bedroom suites at the Walt Disney World Deluxe Resorts there is a way that can be accomplished? I can guarantee that a great Disney travel specialist will know the answers and will advise you on how to get the best of everything that Disney has to offer.
Thank you Cara. Make sure to comment and share your thoughts on this interview.
